Some Resume Don’ts

Here are a few things that are most likely guaranteed to send your resume to the bottom of the pile.

1. Don’t include personal hobbies, interests, marital status, age, etc… Showcase your skills instead.
2. Don’t start your objective with the phrase “to find or secure a job.” That’s what all resumes are for!
3. Don’t use extreme colors for your resume paper. This will NOT make you stand out for the right reasons and makes you appear a bit desperate to be noticed. Again let your skills speak for you.
4. Don’t use small font to squeeze everything in. This will make your resume look too busy.
5. Don’t ever include reasons why you are no longer working at a position. Nobody but you cares.
6. Don’t use your funky email address like “babe4you@…” Create a professional email for your job search as it will make you appear more professional.
7. Don’t exaggerate your titles and positions. If you are considered to be hired, a background check may be done and your former employers will definitely tell your new employer your real job title!
8. Don’t just make your resume a daily duty list but rather try to showcase your skills and talents along with some of the achievements you’ve accomplished. Employers want to hire candidates who have the ability to come in and get to work quickly and add to their productivity and bottom line.

What Type Of Resume Do I Need?

I get calls often with this same question. There are a few facts that will help you decide what type of resume you need. There are basically two types of resumes, the chronological (which lists all of your jobs with descriptions of the duties) and the functional (which lists groups of skills followed by a history of your employment at the end).

I’m a major fan of the combinati0n resume format (functional and chronological) as it focuses on your skills and your job history but it puts your skills first!  Let’s face it, a lot of us have had varied jobs and sometimes breaks in-between jobs so the functional resume provides a great way to focus on your skills you used at each job versus the actual job itself.  I personally write about 95% of my resumes in the combination resume format and most of my clients have had great success in gaining interviews with this format as it speaks to the person hiring as well as they do not have to search through the entire resume to find your skills and talents.
